In the Philippines, August is known as the “Buwan ng Wika” or National Language Month. Even with 94% of Filipinos knowing how to speak English, many still prefer to use their native tongue. Buwan ng Wika not only encourages people to communicate in Filipino and its other dialects. It aims to promote linguistic and cultural activities that can only be described as uniquely Filipino.
Diversify had their own celebration for Buwan ng Wika last August 18th during its monthly huddle. All week, organizers and co-workers communicated exclusively in Filipino with each other, even humorously not understanding a thing if you spoke even one word of English. This culminated in a Friday afternoon filled with signature Filipino food, music and programming that featured outfits from different eras of the country’s history.
The huddles at Diversify are always lively get togethers and this was certainly no different. It was a great effort to not only ring in the upcoming weekend in a celebratory manner, but to honor many Filipino traditions we have been shaped by.
